| Suffragette présente en images comment la Women’s Social and Political Union, basée à Manchester, a contribué aux changements historiques survenus en Grande-Bretagne au tournant du XXe siècle. L’installation, qui cerne un moment charnière d’une lutte difficile pour l’égalité économique et sociale, présente soixante portraits de petit format des principales actrices de ce groupe de suffragettes et de quelques-uns de leurs alliés, partisans, opposants et contemporains impliqués dans des mouvements de réforme sociale connexes. Réalisée à partir de photographies d’archives et d’actualité, la série met l’accent sur les personnes impliquées dans l’organisation des manifestations publiques, et rend ainsi hommage à l’ingéniosité et à l’esprit de corps de ces activistes de la première heure dans leur quête de justice sociale. Suffragette presents a pictorial account of the contributions made by the Manchester-based Women’s Social and Political Union to the historical changes unfolding in Britain at the turn of the 20th century. Sketching a fraught moment in a complex struggle for social and economic equality, the sixty small format paintings that comprise the installation present portraits of the principal members of this suffragist group alongside portraits of a sampling of their allies, supporters, opponents, and contemporaries involved in related social reform movements.
Made after archival and news photographs, the series focuses on subjects involved in the orchestration and staging of public demonstrations and so serves as an homage to the ingenuity and esprit des corps of these early activists in their pursuit of social justice.
